Consuming Fire
On the mountain the fire descendedThe mountain rocked with the presence of the LordThere were billows of smoke and cloud all overAn ear piercing noise like a trumpet sounding, louder and louderHe came down to talk with his chosen peopleTo show Himself to them in person,The people saw the fire, they were terrified, they retreatedThey heard the fearful voice that called to MosesThey pleaded with him 'You stand between us and God'You relay His messages to us, you be in place of God to usWe will serve God through you. They could not abide God's presence; they chose to avoid the consuming fire
So God sent His servants and prophetsThey took His word to the people as they had requestedHe sent them, rising early in the morningYet they did not like the Word they heardThe fire burnt their wayward soulsThey stopped their ears -they could not stand the WordSome they stoned, some they thrashed with whipsOthers they maimed, killed, and buriedThey said "Give us a king like all the other nationsLet him fight our battles, and rule usWe will be his slaves, we will provide his every whim"They could stand a man's chastising but not the consuming fire
The three Hebrew Boys had a deadly choiceWould they bow to Nebuchadnezzar and his idol?Or would they serve God and Him aloneThey chose death over life, to be steadfast and unmovableThe king in blind fury threw them into an overheated furnaceThe intense heat killed the executioners who carried them to the flameThe consuming fire which was meant to destroy themBurned the ropes that tied them and set them freeGod enveloped them that they may walk without hindranceHe stood with them on the ground purged by fireAnd met them face to face, they talked with HimThey had chosen God above all others, God the consuming fire
Is our fire like a Sunday candle that the minister lights once a weekThat a puff of wind blows out the minute we exit out the door?Do we say to another, "You dispense the fire to us,You are our king and priest; we will obey and do whatever you sayWrite it down as rules to refer to, so that we make no mistakesGive us repetitive ceremonies, that require no effort on our part"Or are we willing to be thrown to the intense flamesThe Holy Spirit fire that is promised to them who are calledThe fullness of God's presence burning in our livesBurning up the dross, purifying the gold within usRadiating His glory, fanned by the wind of tribulationGod's Spirit enveloping us, God who is a consuming fire.

References:Deu 5:24 And ye said, Behold, the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God doth talk with man, and he liveth. Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us: if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any more, then we shall die. For who is there of all flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived? Go thou near, and hear all that the LORD our God shall say: and speak thou unto us all that the LORD our God shall speak unto thee; and we will hear it, and do it.Dan 3:17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up....And the princes, governors, and captains, and the king's counsellors, being gathered together, saw these men, upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was an hair of their head singed, neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed on them.Heb 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.1Pe 4:12 Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: but rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.Joh 3:34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.Jer 25:4 And the LORD hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets, rising early and sending them; but ye have not hearkened, nor inclined your ear to hear.Mat 21:37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.
